We use specific graphic design and printing terms when working on custom packaging projects. This glossary defines our lingo so you’re always in the loop of what we’re talking about.  

  • RGB

    Red, Green, Blue light used for digital screens.

  • CMYK

    Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black ink, used for printing.

  • Bleed

    Extra printed area around the edges of your design so nothing gets cut off during printing.

  • Crop Marks

    Lines printed on a file to indicate the
    proper size to cut or “crop” the image
    or document.

  • Dieline

    A blueprint showing where your design will be cut, folded, or scored.

  • Die Cut

    A cutting form that is made using the dieline as the template, which cuts the design out of the printed piece.

  • Trim

    The actual size the document or printed piece gets trimmed to in the final production. Normally indicated by crop or trim marks.

  • Safety

    The area inside the margin where important details won’t be cut off.

  • Pantone Color

    A specific color that looks the same every time it’s printed.

  • Process Color

    The four CMYK colors used in printing to create the color you want. May change slightly from printer to printer.

  • White Dot

    A base layer of white ink used under designs on clear or metallic materials to make colors pop.

  • Metallic

    A shiny material that adds a reflective, metal-like finish to your design.

  • Holographic

    A special material that reflects rainbow-like colors and shifts in light for a futuristic look.

  • Transparent

    A clear material that lets you see through parts of the design, perfect for showing off your product.

  • Matte

    A smooth, non-shiny finish that feels soft and gives a modern, understated look.

  • Glossy

    A shiny, reflective finish that makes colors look vibrant and catches attention.

  • Laminate

    A protective layer added to your packaging to make it stronger and more resistant to damage.

  • Foil

    A shiny metallic layer, usually in gold or silver, applied to specific parts of your design for a luxurious effect.

  • Spot Foil

    Foil applied to specific areas of the design to highlight details, like logos or text.

  • Spot UV

    A glossy coating applied to certain parts of your design to make them stand out, creating a mix of shiny and matte textures.

  • Soft Touch

    Feels like a peach; soft and smooth texture.
